This page includes a list of questions we were asked last time, so we have answered them in advance. We will update this page when we get asked questions that may be relevant to others. Questions and answers about specific young people or that include confidential information will not be added to this page.
How long will we be away, and will that change?
We expect to be away for 8 days, but this may vary between 7-10 depending on cost, activities, and transport timings. We will let you know as soon as we have confirmed the transport.
What happens if a young person gets homesick?
Homesickness is a common and understandable feeling that can affect anyone, regardless of age, when they’re away from their loved ones and familiar surroundings. It’s natural to miss family, friends, and the comforts of home.
As a team, we have extensive experience in supporting individuals who experience homesickness, particularly Alex, who has led young people on extended trips abroad. We’re committed to providing the necessary support to everyone who may feel homesick, including the families back in Sedgley who will also miss their loved ones.
Will we have contact with the young people when they are away?
We will facilitate regular communication between young people and their parents/carers. The specific format and frequency of this communication will be determined through discussions with parents/carers. We will carefully balance the need for contact with the potential impact on the young person, other participants, and parents/carers themselves. It’s important to note that the level of communication will likely be higher than for a typical weekend camp.
What is the minimum number, and how does that relate to the cost?
Our finances are based on eight young people attending; we cannot run the camp if fewer young people sign up.
The cost per person decreases as more young people sign up, which will be accounted for in the finances as we move forwards.
Could we take everyone if they wanted to go?
Yes, we can take everyone eligible if everyone decides to go. We need a minimum of 8. We would like 16 to sign up as this makes the effort and finances more worthwhile, but we can take all 50 that are eligible.
How will it work with Cubs moving to Scouts?
A young person can join Scouts at 10 years old, although typically, we do not move them until they are 10.5. However, we want to include everyone 10-10.5 in case they do move earlier and all the troop go abroad, and they are not included. So we have invited anyone who could be in Scouts. Cubs will be involved in all the preparation, just as they would be if they were in Scouts.
They will be able to wear their Cub uniform if needed.
How will it work with any Scouts leaving the troop?
Anyone leaving the troop when they reach 14.5 years old can still attend as a Young Leader, provided they are registered as Young Leaders with 1st Sedgley and actively participate.
If anyone decides to leave 1st Sedgley, they cannot attend, and any money paid until then would be nonrefundable.
What additional stuff would we need to buy for the camp?
Most essentials are included in the trip cost. Things that young people may not already have are a passport (if applicable), extra spending money, and a few personal items like warm, waterproof trousers, a warm, waterproof jacket, and sturdy walking boots.
